The Great Wall of China Group Research Task

Your group will be given the name of a section of the Great Wall of China to research.
The purpose is to develop an understanding of the terrain and climate relevant to your section of the wall, what it was made from, how it was constructed and how many guard towers it had.
Step one: read through the task and divide the first four dot points between you.
Step two: use the internet or the library to conduct research.
Step three: compile a poster containing the following (note, the final two dot points should be done as a group using the information you have gathered):
- Images of your section of the Wall
- Information about the terrain and climate relevant to your section of the wall
- The material used to construct the wall and the presence of guard towers
- Information about: what it would have been like to build the wall; who would have built the wall; why they would have built it Etc. (one paragraph)
- Speculate on the difficulty of trying to break through or over the Wall and the conditions faced by the soldiers manning it.
- Write a paragraph showing your understanding of how the Wall was constructed and the reasons for its construction.

Go to this link and download a blank map of China http://geography.about.com/library/blank/blxchina.htm
Glue the map into your workbook and, using an atlas or the internet, locate and mark the following:
- the cities – Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Guangzhou
- rivers: Chang Jiang (Yangtze), Huang He (Yellow)
- physical features: Himalayas, Plateau of Tibet, Gobi Desert
- Great Wall of China
- seas: Yellow, South China
Make sure you use pencil and give your map a:

- Brainstorm the terms ‘China’ and ‘Chinese’ in your workbook. You should write down at least 6 statements indicating what you think when you hear these terms.
- Share your statements with some of your classmates, add to your notes if necessary. Together, write a summary in response to the questions: What impressions of China has your group agreed upon? (5-8 lines)
